According the the National Fire Protection Association, 84 percent of all civilian fire deaths result from home structure fires. To protect yourself, you need to protect your home. Many lamp shades are made out of cloth, and that cloth will spread fire quickly if the bulb it's shading catches fire. One preventative step you can take is to cover the lamp shade in your home with fire retardant. It's a quick and easy step to making your home safe. 1.Purchase indoor fire retardant from a home supply store. 2.Pour the fire retardant into a spray bottle if it was not purchased in one. 3.Keep children and pets out of the room where the lamp shade you are spraying is located. 4.Remove the shade from the lamp fixture. Set the lamp down on a carpeted surface. 5.Spray a mist of fire retardant on both sides of the lamp shade. Make sure the entire shade is covered, but do not soak the shade. 6.Wait for the lamp shade to dry. This should take only a matter of minutes if sprayed properly. 7.Return the shade to the lamp fixture. Children and pets may re-enter the room.
How to use polyethylene flame retardant?--Novista Chemicals

1.Add a halogen-containing flame retardant to polyethylene during processing. Bromine and chlorine are halogens used in fire-retardant compounds. Polyethylene is usually produced with fillers, unreactive compounds added to the polymer. Brominated compounds are the most widely used fire-retardant compounds. Add them instead of filler. Brominated compounds prevent fires, because they break down at high temperatures, such as those produced by a fire, and form water and bromide radicals which quench the fire. 2.Add antimony trioxide together with a brominated compound to polyethylene during processing. Antimony trioxide acts synergistically with brominated compounds to enhance fire-retardant properties by slowing down the combustion process. 3.Add a phosphorus-containing compound together with a brominated compound to make polyethylene fire retardant. Phosphorus flame retardants prevent fire by promoting charring. In case of fire, a phosphorus compound will release phosphoric acid, which produces a thick layer of carbon and will cut off the fuel for the flame. 4.Add hydrated aluminum oxide or magnesium oxide alone or together with bromine or phosphorus compounds to low density polyethylene. During a fire, these compounds decompose and absorb energy. They reduce the fire by releasing water and form a fire barrier by charring. Alum oxide and magnesium oxide are non-toxic, non-volatile and environmentally friendly.

They may be mixed with the base material (additive flame retardants) or chemically bonded to it (reactive flame retardants).Mineral flame retardants are typically additive while organohalogen and organophosphorus compounds can be either reactive or additive. Effectiveness The effectiveness of flame retardant chemicals at reducing the flammability of consumer products in house fires is disputed. Advocates for the flame retardant industry, such as the American Chemistry Council`s North American Flame Retardant Alliance, cite a study from the National Bureau of Standards indicating that a room filled with flame-retarded products (a polyurethane foam-padded chair and several other objects, including cabinetry and electronics) offered a 15-fold greater time window for occupants to escape the room than a similar room free of flame retardants.However, critics of this position, including the lead study author, argue that the levels of flame retardant used in the 1988 study, while found commercially, are much higher than the levels required by TB 117 and used broadly in the United States in upholstered furniture. Another study concluded flame retardants are an effective tool to reduce fire risks without creating toxic emissions. Several studies in the 1980s tested ignition in whole pieces of furniture with different upholstery and filling types, including different flame retardant formulations. In particular, they looked at maximum heat release and time to maximum heat release, two key indicators of fire danger. These studies found that the type of fabric covering had a large influence on ease of ignition, that cotton fillings were much less flammable than polyurethane foam fillings, and that an
