Highlights: 1.Water absorption test was made for several different frost insulation materials. 2.Immersion time was 48 months instead of 1 month suggested in standard. 3.The effect of frost attack and cutting method was also taken into account. 4.Frost attack was significant for absorption of EPS products. 5.The ageing had significant effect on XPS products while frost attack had a minor effect. Abstract Water absorption of several different frost insulation materials was tested for four years. The test took into account both immersion and frost attack to materials. On the basis of the research the water absorption on XPS specimens is significantly minor compared to EPS specimens that were studied. The most significant result was that freezing of test specimens did not affect on water absorption of XPS specimens but had a major effect on water absorption of EPS specimens. With frozen EPS specimen the absorption continued increasing even after 48 months of immersion. Presumably the reason for such a behaviour is that the pore structure of EPS is not able to resist the tension caused by freezing water and therefore cracks are formed. Thus, more water absorbs inside the EPS through the cracks and it causes cracking deeper in the specimen which is why absorption increases after every freezing period.

Solvay has signed a stock purchase agreement with Basell to sell its subsidiary Solvay Engineered Polymers (SEP), a leading supplier of polypropylene compounds. This transaction will be subject to relevant regulatory approval, and is estimated to be completed early in 2008. SEP, which is essentially active in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) region, has operations in Mansfield and Grand Prairie, Texas, as well as in Auburn Hills, Michigan. The company is also represented in Europe and China through sales offices. The annual sales of SEP account for less than 2% of the turnover of the Solvay group. Solvay, headquartered in Brussels, is committed to the development and manufacturing of specialty polymers, in a drive to offer the world's broadest range of high performance and ultra-high performance materials. However, the strategic fit of SEP's polypropylene compounding activities has become limited within Solvay's Plastics Sector because, among other reasons, the Group completed the divestiture of its polypropylene resin production in 2001. "Over the past years, SEP has made great progress in expanding its product and application range," commented Vincenzo Morici, General Manager of the Specialty Polymers Strategic Business Unit, Solvay. "Joining Basell is now the right way forward for SEP, as it will provide the company with upstream integration into key raw materials, and access to complementary technologies and market segments. Reduce PVC Production Cost with Calcium Carbonate powder The effects of virgin PVC percentage, recycled PVC percentage, CaCO3 percentage and particle size, and plasticizer percentage and type; on the mechanical properties of PVC electrical insulation and cost were examined. The DoE mixture approach was adopted in designing the experiments and analyzing the results. The analysis showed that for maximum UTS the compound should consist of: 17.5% DOP, 62.5% virgin PVC, and 20.0% CaCO 3 of particle size 5 microns. For the highest ductility the compound should be made of 35% virgin PVC, 20% CaCO 3 of particle size 5 microns, and 45.0% DOP plasticizer. Finally, a minimum materials cost for a PVC insulation of an electrical cable can be achieved through using 20% virgin PVC, 18.75% recycled PVC, 43.75% CaCO 3 with participle size 10 microns, 14% DOP plasticizer, and 3.5% CPW plasticizer. This minimum-cost composition will result in ASTM acceptable values of 17.32 MPa for the UTS, 322% ductility, and it will cost 0.97 $/Kg under the Jordanian market conditions.

Acrylic impact modifier (TIM 808,TIM 808A,TIM 809) is core-shell structure of Acrylic impact modifier.when pvc suffers external impact the rubber elastomers core can produce shear band and silver craze to transfer impact energy to heat, so AIM can greatly improve the impact-strength. Generally, particle size, the core-shell structure and glass transition temperature can affect Acrylic impact modifier's impact strength. Particle size from 150 to 200nm is optimum size.so you can judge it by following two principle, it is easy to produce silver craze and shear craze. Without additives PVC would not be a particularly useful substance, but its compatibility with a wide range of additives – to soften it, colour it, make it more processable or longer lasting, results in a broad range of potential applications from car underbody seals and flexible roof membranes to pipes and window profiles. PVC products can be rigid or flexible, opaque or transparent, coloured and insulating or conducting. There is not just one PVC but a whole family of products tailor-made to suit the needs of each application. Unlike most other thermoplastics, the majority of PVC applications have a lifetime of between 10 and 100 years. This requires proven durability and stabilisers play an important part in achieving such performance. All polymers require stabilisers of one sort or another; PVC is no different in this respect. Formulating PVC Products Before PVC can be made into products, it has to be combined with a range of special additives. The essential additives for all PVC materials are stabilisers and lubricants; in the case of flexible PVC, plasticisers are also incorporated. Other additives which may be used include fillers, processing aids, impact modifiers and pigments. Additives will influence or determine the mechanical properties, light and thermal stability, colour, clarity and electrical properties of the product. Once the additives have been selected, they are mixed with the polymer in a process called compounding. One method uses an intensive high-speed mixer that intimately blends all the ingredients.
