What Are The Applications Of Textile Flame Retardants In The Textile Industry

2022-10-22

Flame retardants, functional additives that endow flammable polymers with flame retardancy, are mainly designed for the flame retardancy of polymer materials; there are many types of flame retardants, which are divided into additive flame retardants and reactions according to the method of use Type Flame Retardant.

The additive flame retardant is added to the polymer by mechanical mixing method to make the polymer flame retardant. At present, the additive flame retardant mainly includes organic flame retardant and Inorganic Flame Retardant, halogen flame retardant (organic Chloride and organic bromide) and non-halogen.

Organic is some flame retardants represented by bromine, phosphorus nitrogen, nitrogen and red phosphorus and compounds. Inorganic are mainly antimony trioxide, magnesium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, silicon and other flame retardant systems.

Reactive flame retardants are used as a monomer to participate in the polymerization reaction, so the polymer itself contains flame retardant components. Its advantage is that it has less impact on the performance of polymer materials and has long-lasting flame retardancy.

The types of textile fibers involve natural fibers, man-made fibers, and synthetic fibers, of which cotton, polyester and wool fibers are the most used.

Textiles have a larger fiber specific surface area because they burn more easily and fire spread more quickly.

The suspended fabric is flammable due to its large exposed area, and flames can flash across the surface. All traditional fabric fibers are combustible, the only difference lies in their flammability. With the use of synthetic fibers, the ignition risk of textiles is reduced.

Lightweight fabrics made of thermoplastic fibers show a certain degree of self-extinguishing due to the presence of droplets, but heavyweight fabrics tend to burn more easily due to the greater adhesion of the molten polymer.

The actual purpose of flame retardant treatment of decorative fabrics is to delay the spread of flames and reduce the release of toxic gases.

The flame retardant finishing methods of fabrics include:

1. Modification during the polymerization process, that is, the flame retardant is copolymerized with the polymer monomer at the bonding stage, or the flame retardant group is introduced into the polymer chain for graft modification;

2. Modification in the spinning process, that is, a certain amount of flame retardant is added to the polymer before spinning and forming, and the flame retardant is evenly dispersed in the polymer melt through mixing processing;

3. Modification is carried out in the finishing process, that is, padding, baking, high temperature and high pressure dipping, coating and other methods are used to fix the flame retardant on the fiber or fabric to obtain a flame retardant effect.
