The Development Prospect And Direction of PP Plastic Flame Retardant

2022-08-27

The development prospect and development direction of PP plastic Flame Retardant is a new type of reactive flame retardant containing Br (bromine), P (phosphorus) N (nitrogen) and other elements.

Brominated Flame Retardant

Most brominated flame retardants will decompose at 200-300 ℃, this temperature range is also the decomposition temperature range of polypropylene, so when polypropylene is thermally decomposed, brominated flame retardants also begin to decompose, and can capture its The free radicals generated by the degradation reaction, thereby delaying or terminating the combustion chain reaction. At the same time, the released HBr itself is a refractory gas. This gas has a high density and can cover the surface of the material, which can block the flammable gas on the surface and inhibit the combustion of the material.

The main disadvantage of brominated flame retardants is that they reduce the anti-ultraviolet stability of the flame-retardant substrate, and generate more smoke, corrosive gases and toxic gases during combustion, which limits their application.

Phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardant

Phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardants are also called intumescent flame retardants. When the polymer containing these flame retardants is heated, a uniform carbonaceous foam layer can be formed on the surface, which can be used for heat insulation, oxygen insulation and smoke suppression. It has good flame retardant properties and prevents the phenomenon of molten droplets. The Intumescent Flame Retardant system generally consists of three parts: acid source (dehydrating agent), carbon source (carbon-forming agent) and gas source (nitrogen source, foaming source). Intumescent flame retardants play a flame retardant role in the condensed phase mainly by forming a porous carbon foam layer. Phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardants have the advantages of no halogen, low smoke and low toxicity.

Phosphorus flame retardant

Phosphorus-based flame retardants act as flame retardants to promote dehydration and carbonization in the initial decomposition of high polymers. This dehydration and carbonization step must rely on the oxygen-containing groups of the polymer itself, for polymers with oxygen-containing groups in their own structure. Their flame retardant effect will be better. For polypropylene, since its molecular structure has no oxygen-containing groups, the flame retardant effect of phosphorus-based flame retardants alone is not good, but if it is compounded with (OH)3 and Mg(OH)2, it can be A synergistic effect is produced, resulting in a good flame retardant effect.
